This was our first cruise with Holland America and I have to admit that we were somewhat surprised and disappointed. We had expected to have superior shows, dining, exercise facilities and even tours. We could not help comparing somewhat unfavourably to our previous experiences with Princess where the shows had a lot of variety and choice, the food (especially on our last cruise with them) was excellent, the fitness rooms were up-to-date and more than adequate, and the tours were 1st class. The personnel on Holland America were more than accomadating and we would rate them highly. We did, though miss the international flavour of the Princess staff although some countries were well represented. The overall age of the cruisers was (although not unexpected) rather old. We like the spread of age groups on Princess. The age of the people on this ship could have been because of the length and the time of the year. Many, because of their advanced years had trouble keeping up on tours and slowed the tours considerably. Boarding and deboarding with Holland America was a very pleasant experience and I have to give them top marks for this. Saying all of this, we did enjoy our experience of a lengthier cruise, combined with a peep of Europe. We have decided to go with other lines and not Holland America.
