In terms of delivery, Holland America lives up to its name by providing above average service and products, while taking you to some very beautiful and exotic places. Our only complaint for the entire 10-day cruise was the noise experienced in our cabin. You are on a ship and can expect to hear the workings of the machines that tirelessly propel you to your next destination. However, our cabin was located adjacent to a piece of equipment that intermittently sounded like a "garborater" (food waste disposal) or large water pump, that would activiate for 1-2 minutes at a time every few hours, which would literally make the floor and the walls of the room vibrate.... We learned to live with it. On the last night of the cruise, however, with a pending 6:00am wake-up to prepare for disembarkation, this equipment was running constantly from 11:00pm to 1:00am... the sound ceased at 00:52 on the Friday, January 25th. I called the "front desk" at midnight to report the noise. Fifteen minutes later, I called back and the young lady advised me that the noise was due to the ship moving slowly and could not be avoided... that they could supply ear plugs and an "egg mattress" to help deal with the noise and vibration. We declined the offer... As mentioned, the "noise from the ship moving slowly" disappeared at 00:52... the ship must have sped up? To be honest, the explanation provided was not adequate as we knew that this noise had nothing to do with the speed of the ship - it had occurred before when the ship was docked, as well as when it was travelling at 20+ knots. Like a stadium or concert hall that warns ticket purchasers of potential "obstructed views", passengers should receive similar warnings about potential noise and vibration in cabins that are in close proximity to ship machinery. To the future tenants of room 786 on the Maasdam, I offer my sympathy. Conversely, to our cabin attendant, Hari, our dining room waiter, Joseph, and all of the staff and officers of the Maasdam, we extend our thanks for a job well-done! Sincerely, Rod & Margaret Morgan Maasdam 2008
