This was an excellent itinerary on a very comfortable ship. Those of you familiar with the Carnival Liberty layout will find this to be almost identical. There are only two decks which give you bow to stern access. However, the ship is very nicely appointed with modern yet sophisticated decor. The entertainment was fabulous, probably the best we have seen in all our cruise experience, especially the musical revues. The special effects were extremely well done. The food was well done, but not very sophisticated. The cuisine was primarily Italian trattoria, so a bit rustic by cruise standards, but enjoyable nonetheless. The shp definitely has a European ambiance, with most things done in five languages, but this was not a barrier to enjoyment, although my daughter (10 years old) was a bit uncomfortable with the language capabilities of the staff in the childrens' centre. The shore excursions were definitely a highlight of the entire experience, with very knowledgeable and articulate guides in Olympia, Athens, Ephesus, and Alexandria. Prior to our cruise, we spent three days in Rome at the Best Western Canada hotel, which I would highly recommend for several reasons. The location is ideal, only four blocks from Termini station, and within easy walking distance of most of the sights of old Rome. The hotel itself is well appointed, with lovely spacious rooms, a small lounge-bar area, and offers a delicious full American breakfast buffet. It is in a quiet area without too much traffic, and the staff are very friendly and professional, as well as quite conversant in English. Overall, this was a very positive experience, and I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel or this cruise line to anyone interested in getting a real taste of the Mediterranean, on an itinerary including Rome, Savona, Katakolon, Athens, Izmir, Rhodes, Cyprus, and Alexandria.
